What to choose, what to choose...

I've been thinking long and hard about what my little word for this year will be. There were a few possibilities that I tried out but nothing really felt right. I realised I would just have to choose one.

And then it hit me. Choose. That's exactly what I need this year. To live a bit more deliberately. To spend my time more intentionally. To stop reacting automatically, without thinking.

I realised I had already picked this word more than a year ago when I got my tattoo. The word I had designed for my left wrist? Choose. So I have.

LA had an awesome tutorial for a Vintage Tie Cuff last week, and since I happened to have a vintage tie that I loved (but had no idea what to do with) lying around, I gave it a go.

Super easy and fun. It just so happened to match my outfit (and I use the term loosely) today as well!

One of the things I really wanted to do these holidays was make some Soft Pretzels. I was inspired by Kyla's post and Emma and Elsie's version too. They didn't seem too difficult so I gave it a go.

And OMG, they were delicious. I'm so glad I only made a half sized batch! These are definitely going in my 'make all the time' roster.

I've taken down the tree and vacuumed up the glitter. Christmas is over and I am ready for the new year.

One thing I find about this time of year, is an increase in my compulsion to make things. Usually I'm busy making books and cards and presents but this year its the kitchen that has been calling my name.
I've made a delicious (and super easy) capsicum jam that looks gloriously christmassy and taste divine.

And a plate full of swirly red marshmallows, which again were super easy and pretty impressive (if I do say so myself!)

I've also made a batch of Rocky Road and have plans for another flavour of marshmallows (orange and pistachio) and some little nut pies.

I've also begun the dreamy task of planning the Christmas Day Menu. I haven't narrowed down the choices so far, I'm having far too much fun dreaming of all the choices.

Flow magazine

A couple of months ago I did an interview with Flow magazine about art journalling. I had completely forgotten about it until yesterday when I got home to find a copy in the mailbox.

It was pretty neat to see my pages and photos in an actual magazine, which by the way is super cool. They have lots of little extras like stickers and wee foldout books.

Now I only wish that I could read Dutch! Oh well, I'll have to make do with looking at the pictures.

Pretty peonies

Yet one more wonderful thing about this time of year is the abundance of peonies. I found two hidden in the depths of our garden (sadly they were past their best) but thanks to our local farmers' market, I've had this pretty vase full for more than a week now! I love seeing fresh flowers in the house, such a pretty treat.

Note: Peonies like the cold, so fill their vase with ice cubes everyday and you'll extend their blooming time!

(very) New Potatoes

When I first planted my garden, I had high hopes of eating my very own potatoes for Christmas dinner. Which might have been a little optimistic, considering we were only 60 days away from Christmas at the time. Now with 14 days to go I am hopeful that we will be ready in time, as evidenced below (I couldn't help having a wee peek)

However, I think the size will have to increase considerably in the next couple of weeks for us to have enough for an actual meal!

Christmas traditions

It would be no exaggeration to say that christmas is my favourite time of year. And I squeeze it for every joyful drop! I have quite a few favourite traditions at this time of year. Here are just a few of them...

Covering the house in christmas trees (I have three!) and candles and ribbons and candy
Late night Christmas shopping (well browsing mostly since all the shopping is usually already done!)
Wrapping all my presents while watching my favourite christmas dvd's
Dancing round the house listening to all my favourite christmas songs
Baking all sorts of delicious little things like peppermint marshmallows and mini pecan pies
Carefully planning my christmas present lists then totally blowing them when I find something better
Sneaking in a little gift buying for myself
Dreaming about The Meal and all the delicious things I'm going to make

Every December I make myself a little mini book. I never complete a whole December Daily so I make it a little less strenuous by only planning 12 journalling pages and the rest is filled with lists and notes and plans with pretty papers.

I was excited to see the Kelly Purkey has a new class, Sketchpad, and has released Sketchbook 3 as a pdf. I'm a big fan so immediately got both. Which meant I had no excuse not to do some scrapbooking, especially since I just had some photos printed.

They are both such great classes and filled with great sketches. I've got more to show you so stay tuned!

After a month of blogging everyday, I needed a break. But I didn't mean for it to be quite this long! Funny how time slips away, isn't it?

So, without further ado, here is a totally random list of 11 things about me:

I love randomly weird number combinations and have been looking forward to today for some time, not for any real reason, other than to say it is 11.11.11 (at 11.11).
I've been working my way through Kelly Purkey's new Sketchpad class and I love it! It feels good to be scrapping again. I'd love to buy some new papers but have made a deal with myself to really try and use what I have. It makes it a little more challenging but even more rewarding.
I am enjoying watching my little garden grow (especially all the little flowers on the strawberry plants) but not loving the slugs and snails and constant weeding. Can't wait to actually eat something I've grown.
We had the most amazing sunrise this morning, I actually had to stop my walk halfway and go back to the house so I could take a photo (above) before I carried on walking. The dog thought I was crazy.
Poor Lily has been quite sick but seems to be on the mend now. The sneezing has been pretty horrendous so I'll be glad when she's back to normal. Doesn't stop her begging for food or going on walks though.
I'm so happy that it is Friday today and I can't wait to have a whole weekend with no plans (the first for a month)! I plan to do what-ever I want, when-ever I want. Heaven.
I am loving Peta Mathias' show Peta's Culinary Adventures In France. It makes me want to pack up and fly to France so badly. And eat cheese, a lot of cheese.
I've started another class from the Brave Girls Club and I can't wait to share it with you! I love getting messy with glue and paper and paint. It's so good to be creative and messy when my job requires me to be creative and precise.
I'm really not that great at waiting for things, I have absolutely no patience. And now I have the ultimate waiting test. Now I only have 841 days to wait! What I'm waiting for is a secret for now.
This year for Christmas we have decided not to give each other presents but we are going to get a new mattress and I (and my back) can't wait. It'll be a great present, but slightly hard to wrap!
I went to print out some photos the other day and realised I have stopped taking self-portraits, something that must be remedied soon!

Art Journal :: Rest

Here's a quick little video of an art journal page I created after the long weekend.

Prompt: What does rest mean to you? What do you need to feel most relaxed, balanced and peaceful?

Technique: I glued down a paper doily and then used a stencil to paint on a title. You could also hand letter it. Then I added some simple journalling and a few pretty sequins for sparkle. Quick and simple.

I scored this totally cute lamp for $10 on a recent thifting trip. I saw past the U.G.L.Y shade and saw it's potential.

Art Journal :: Decisions

Sometimes I find it really hard to make decisions. Here is a page I created to help me decide about something I've struggled with.

Prompt: Decisions

What are you trying to decide? It doesn't matter if the decision is huge or something very minor. Why are you hesitating? Do you secretly deep-down know what you want? Write down both sides of the argument. It will probably become clear what you really want.

Technique:

Layer your page with scrap papers, I used an old book page and the inside of an envelope. Find a magazine or catalog picture that best suits your mood. Cut (or tear) it up and use 3 or 4 pieces in random places on the page. Stick it all down with plenty of masking tape. Then start journalling. As little or as much as you need. Add some doodles if you feel like it.

Hopefully you will have made the decision, or at least have a clearer picture of what's holding you back.

What I've learned about blogging...

Four months ago I was getting a bit weary of blogging so I took the Blog Love e-course by Elsie. I loved it. In fact read the whole thing in one afternoon. I redesigned my blog, planned a schedule (you can download my Blog Schedule Template at the bottom of this post) and made some decisions about what I wanted my blog to be. Blogging is back to being one of my favourite hobbies again.

Here's some things I've learned over the last few months...

I've found it so helpful to have a little guide for my blog. I don't have to sit there wondering what to blog about, I never feel bad because I haven't blogged in ages and it isn't set in stone (pencil in fact) so I can swap things around when I need/want to. At the start of each month I have a wee brainstorm session and write down any ideas for blog posts. Add in some regular features and you have yourself a wee schedule.

There are just some days (weeks) when I know I am not going to get the time to blog. I don't want to be a slave to my blog but I also want to be consistent with the amount of posts I am putting up. This is where scheduled posts are a life saver. If I know I have a couple of hours free, then I can start or finish some posts ahead of time. It feels good to know that my blog will keep rolling even if I'm flat out with life.

There are some days when I want nothing more than to sit on the couch and watch movies. And while sometimes this is the perfect plan, it doesn't really make for great blog reading. Knowing that I could write a great post makes me more likely to have adventures, create pretty things and get out and enjoy life.

One of the great things about my blog is the way it has encouraged me to improve some of my other hobbies. I've always loved taking photos and now I have a reason to keep taking better and better photos, find more creative ways to shoot and keeping improving my editing skills.

Before and After :: Skirt Cushion

I've had this skirt for years and it never really fit right but I loved the pattern so I've never been able to part with it. So I decided to use the fabric and make something pretty I can use everyday.

After I cut the waist band off, I roughly traced two squares that would fit my pillow and then made some ties with the remaining fabric. Sewed, stuffed and tied. And a new cushion is born.

Art Journal :: Early Observations

I love getting up early and creating in my art journal. Here is a page I created very early one morning.

Prompt: Early Observations ( or Late Observations)

Take some time to really feel the present. What can you hear, see, smell, feel? How does it make you feel. Ignore all the things you need to do or get done, and really be in the moment. Take a breath and write it down.

Technique:

Use water colours ( I used water-soluble crayons) to lay a mix of colours on your page. Then cover roughly with gesso. Repeat these two steps until you have a layered page you are happy with. then add some thicker lines of gesso in a criss-cross pattern. Write down your observations and add any embellishments/doodles to finish.

I picked up this little foot stool for $4 (!) at a charity shop and I knew I could give it a new lease of life.

All it took was a little bit of fabric and a couple of coats of spray paint and voila! A pretty new stool.

Mixed Paper Art Journal Tutorial

I love making my own art journals. I may even enjoy it as much as doing the actual art journalling!

Here is one way to make an easy mixed paper art journal from an old book.

1. Cut the covers off an old book. I also cut out any pages with great illustrations.

2. Sort through your paper stash (or maybe start one!) and pick out some papers that are roughly the same size as the books you are using.

3. Punch holes through your covers and papers. This time I used my Bind-it-all but other times I have used a hole punch and book rings, or even tied the book together with ribbons. Use whatever you have on hand.

4. Bind your book together and decorate you cover. I kept it simple with a strip of patterned paper and some buttons. I also found a small key with "30" engraved on it, which I thought was appropriate!

5. Have fun when choosing your papers. Some ideas are scrapbooking paper, old shopping bags, transparencies, old book pages, envelopes, cardboard from cereal packets, larger pieces of paper folded to fit, the possibilities are endless. I love gluing sheets of newspaper together, painting them roughly with gesso and stitching the edges together.

My covers had this fantastic illustration inside them, so I very simply embellished it with some typed paper stripes, the same patterned paper and a felt arrow to cover the stitching from the buttons.

I love invitations. Always have. They are my favourite thing about having a party. In fact, they are sometimes the reason to have a party!

We are a long way from planning our wedding but one thing I'm looking forward to is designing the invitations.
I can't wait to put together those pretty little packages.

Little pots of green

One of the things I wanted to do this spring was to plant a herb garden. We rent our house so I didn't want to plant them in the garden. So instead I made a little potted her garden.

So far I have chives, thyme, mint, garlic chives and rosemary. But I plan to add many more!

Now all I have to do is wait for them to grow just a little bit so I can actually use them!

This weekend is finally the beginning of Daylight Savings. I've been waiting for this for months.

Here are some lovely things that have been keeping me occupied while I wait...

The lovely home and garden of Abigail Ahern, which couldn't be prettier. Helped in part by her cute dog. Originally seen on design is mine.

I'm always a fan of Kelly Purkey's layouts, but her layouts from Studio Calico's Glee Club are so cute! I love the tags on this page.

I'm in love with Jessica Hische's workspace. So organised and clean. Perfect. Found on Design*Sponge.

Teesha's painting before and after is pretty inspiring. So often I have things I'm not happy with, but I can never seem to find a way to make them work.

I love Laura Terp Hansen's dining room, especially that beautiful pink light shade. From Design*Sponge.

A painting for Daisy

A friend recently became an aunt again and wanted a gift to give her new niece. She asked me if I would paint Daisy something special.

I hope Daisy loves it!

Rainy Day Paper Garland

It was so grey and wet this weekend and I really needed some cheeriness. So I sat down and made myself a colourful little paper garland.

These are so easy to make. I used punched shapes but you could easily use diecuts or scissors.

Cut out your shapes. You need two shapes for each flower.
Using a sewing machine (or you could hand sew) stitch the two shapes together, one on top of the other. Repeat for each flower.
Stitch a little between flowers.
Once you have reached your desired length, fold the flower halves back until they are at right angles.
Hang and enjoy!

Art Journaling and me

I was recently interviewed by Flow magazine about art journalling. And I realised that, although art journalling is a large part of my life, I don't very often share my journals here.

So I thought I'd share a few pages here...

I started art journalling about 6 years ago, when Rachel Denbow offered her first class, Steady Hand Faulty Heart. I was instantly hooked.

Since then I've taken more classes by Rachel and also Kara, Debee and Vivianna.

I use all sorts of materials, paint, pens, paper, photos, magazines, fabric, stitching, embellishments, ribbons, stickers, ink, pencils, crayons, found papers... the list goes on and on.

I don't have a set style. Some of my pages are more graphic, some are messy, some are almost totally covered in words and some have none at all.

I've filled many journals, some bought, some handmade. Some filled with great memories, and some that are only there to remind me how far I've come.

Scrapping Sunday...

I finally sat down and spent some time scrapping on Sunday. It took me a while to get into it but I'm happy with the results.

I had another go at some 8 1/2 x 11 pages. I'm really falling for this format. It may well be my new favourite.

It felt good to get these holiday photos onto paper. Four layouts down and 22 to go!

A night out...

We had a great night out at the Civic Theatre listening to The Phoenix Foundation.

The venue was fantastic, the music was great and the lighting was amazing.

This is only stop two on their New Zealand tour so go and see them if you can!

Learn Something New Everyday

I am taking part in Shimelle's Learn Something New Everyday again this year. But this time I thought I'd make it a little easier on myself by creating my album ahead of time and then all I have to do each day is:

Learn a lesson
Type it out and glue it down
Add a mini instax if I want too

Simple.

So in the weekend I made a really simple 6x4 album. I grabbed 5 different card stocks, cut them all down to 6x4 and then I went to town with ink splatters, cut-outs from the insides of some envelopes, some washi tape and stitching.

I'm really happy with how it turned out. Now I just have to keep up the learning.

Macaron madness

I have been struck down, stricken, infected with Macaron Madness! For a few weeks now I have been rangling with these fussy little buggers. Getting successful, semi successful and absolute failure batches. These are the best success I've had so far...

I swear one batch tasted like roast meat! But images like these keep me questing for the perfect recipe, the perfect technique.

So yes, I am refusing to give up. Tomorrow is another day and another batch.

Jochen and Tina Frey's home tour on Design*sponge is so cute. I love their dog and all the quirky artwork. I love a home that has a sense of humour!

I'm pretty excited about Kara's latest class. I've taken three of her classes before and have loved everyone of them. You can join the fun here.

I love seeing where other people work and Leigh-ann shared a great post on her weekend work set up. So much fun and SO many gadgets (I may be a tiny bit jealous).
