Succulent Sunday

Despite weeks of neglect (which just goes to show it is PRETTY hard to kill succulents!), my little babies are still going strong. I decided to move the remaining ones in more permanent homes, a pot of different varieties and a couple of candles holders I bough on the cheap. Fingers crossed they survive their rough transition in the middle of winter. I've left them in the sunniest spot in the house (which at this time of year is pretty limited) so fingers crossed!

Finally some of my little succulent babies are big enough to move into their own little pot. Grow, grow, grow!

As you can see above, my succulent propagating experiment is going much better this time. I wish I could tell you what the magic secret is, but really, I'm still playing around with what works. I suspect it might be the time of year, the fact that I'm keeping them watered more regularly and I moved them out of the direct sunlight.

I have found it much easier to propagate from cuttings rather than from individual leaves like above. I enjoy the process so much but I am quite quickly running out of room!

I've finally moved anything that was mildly successful into a bigger pot, fingers crossed they will continue to prosper.

I've also filled my tray back up with cuttings to start round two, hopefully with slightly better results. At least I have a better idea of what to expect this time, especially in terms of how long things take (much longer than I first thought), how much light and water they need (bright but not direct sunlight and a light spraying everyday - don't forget!). 

I've added a LOT more leaves this time, which hopefully will result in more pups, but I've also added some larger cuttings which I hope I can get to sprout roots and hasten the process of ending up with little succulents!

Succulent Sunday :: Propagation continued

So what have I learned through this whole experiment? Patience is the key to succulent propagation.

This is what I have after 3 months. And to be honest, I had nothing for the first two. I had almost given up when one day I noticed the tiniest, most microscopic little bump on one of the leaves. Too small to even photograph. So I continued to wait, and this is what I have today. All different sizes, all different stages.

I'm going to have to continue to be patient but I'm pretty sure in the next month I'll have these planted into some pots and then I'll have to wait and see again!

The sun was out and I was tidying up my indoor and outdoor succulents and I decided to try my hand at propagating a few of them. I've read a few online tutorials and they all sound relatively easy so I'll see how I go. Fingers crossed I end up with so many I don't know what to do with. (Although I like this idea!)

Despite the TERRIBLE weather here at the moment, it is actually spring and these little beauties are creating pups like crazy! I can't wait until it warms up a bit and daylight savings come into effect and I can properly start propagating these little darlings.

As we head into winter here, these little pretties are pretty much the only signs of life around here. Luckily I have a whole window sill full to keep the smile on my face.

I've discovered how handy it can be to use a reflector while taking indoor photos, especially against a bright backdrop such as this window. Nothing fancy, just a simple piece of white card that I use for my Project Life spreads. But it works a treat for softening dark shadows.

It might be the climate here, but the majority of succulents I find/grow tend to be a light aqua colour, so I get really excited when I find other coloured succulents to grow. These red/purple ones are fast becoming a favourite.

These things just keep growing and growing. I think they have really enjoyed there new home in the sun (I mean, wouldn't we all!). I'm going to have to repot them into something bigger soon.

I know that Succulent Sunday is really more an Instagram thing, but I have developed such an obsession for succulents that I wanted to document them here. This summer I've rescued previously-thought-dead ones, bought beautiful new ones and propagated babies from old favourites. I've shared cuttings with friends and taken cuttings from family. I even built a window shelf to give them all a sunny home. For this serial plant-killer, I've finally found the one thing I can grow!
